Myelodysplastic syndromes are a group of disorders caused by poorly formed or non-performing blood cells. New immature blood cells are made in the bone marrow that mature over time. Myelodysplastic syndromes occur when the blood cells don't mature and there are more immature blood cells in the bloodstream than the mature blood cells.
