Candide

Candide, written by Voltaire and first published in 1759, is one of the most famous and enduring works of Western literature. It's a satirical novella that critiques the social, political, and philosophical issues of Voltaire’s time, particularly the optimism promoted by the philosophy of Leibniz and the idea that “all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds.” The novella ends with Candide and his companions settling on a farm, where they decide to live simply and focus on cultivating their own land rather than continuing their quest for unattainable perfection.
